About this line:

These comfortable fair trade caftans are based on the classic kaftans of India.  Made with a fine cotton that assures that this will be a valued “vintage” piece in the future and is of the quality that can be passed down in your family.

This kaftan is made of hand block printed fabric.  In India, the ancient hand block printing technique utilizes hand-carved teak wood blocks that are dipped in dye and stamped by hand onto cotton or silk.  Multiple colors are each applied separately with its own block.

The seamless printing shows the fine skill of the block-printers, and it is a craft that has been passed down from generation to generation. Each region of India has a different style of block-printing, and each family has their own collection of wooden blocks.

A skilled artist can print 20 meters per day of a one-block design or four meters per day of a four-block design.
