Ikat is an ancient (5,000+ year) artisanal technique primarily in India and Indonesia. Ikat is done by marking off designs on long bundles of yarn, applying bands accordingly, then resist-dyeing sections of the yarns before weaving the fabric on a loom. The blurriness of ikat is indicative of the difficulty of aligning the threads to create the distinctive patterns. (YouTube it, it's really cool.)
Your purchase supports the current generation of expert ikat artisans.
Measurements: 3.5” inseam
Material: 100% Indian cotton and non-toxic dyes.
Care: Machine wash cold & gentle and hang to dry for best results. As the piece is 100% cotton, there could be a small shrinkage of about 5% if you put it in the dryer. The fabric is color-fast for the most part; it goes through a washing and curing process to keep the dyes from spreading. We recommend washing colors separate, however.
Sizing: True-to-size. Please see sizing chart. The model is wearing a small.
From: Designed in New Orleans for the US market and produced in India.
Note: Due to the handmade nature of these scarves, there may be a slight color variation or small anomalies that add to the natural beauty of these items.
About this line:
Your purchase helps provide a secure job with fair wages and a positive working environment to artisan cooperatives in the Bangalore and Andhra Pradesh, India areas.
This Fair Trade Federation member secures artisans with fair wages, safe and healthy working conditions (as well as the opportunity to work from the family home) and long term, stable employment.
They are also committed to using eco-friendly materials throughout the supply chain, currently shifting from 100% Indian cotton to 100% Indian organic cotton, as well as assuring that the dyes are safe for people and the environment.
Fair trade-based organizations (non-profits, wholesale partners) work to bring artisan and ethically-produced goods to a broader market like the United States. This opens the door for fair payment that the artisans otherwise may have a difficult time commanding in their local markets.
Fair trade retailers, like ALVY, provide you with the opportunity to experience the high-quality and artistry from around the world, and support a new way of caring for our fellow humans.
