Montana Agate originally was formed in the Yellowstone National Park area of Wyoming as a result of volcanic activity approximately 65 million years ago. Ash and lava entombed the mighty redwoods and sequoias in the swampy inland ocean that was this part of the present-day United States, and mineral laden silica-water flowed into the cavities and pockets left by the dying trees and bubbling lava, slowly forming this natural marvel.
This Montana Agate is found spread in and around a 670 mile section of the Yellowstone River, from the National Park in Wyoming to North Dakota.
It is characterized by translucent quartz accented with bands of black, brown, and orange. The red orange color is the result of iron oxide, and the black and brown is the result of manganese oxide. On very rare occasions copper has given a green color.
Montana Agate is also sometimes known as Yellowstone Agate. It is considered a “Moss Agate” variety as its inclusions often looks like the shape of moss, and sometimes also as an “Iris Agate” because of the iridescence that shows up.
Agate’s vibrational frequency has been treasured for thousands of years with its reputation for being grounding, balancing and harmonizing, and as perfect companions in the quest for healing and self-confidence.
