About this line:
The accompanying picture is from the workshop in which this piece was made.
This line is produced under fair trade principles by a team of talented seamstresses in Cambodia where poverty is widespread; with few economic opportunities for the average citizen and crushing pressures in the garment industry, many workplaces are exploitative.
In deep contrast, the workshop in which this piece is made is a safe and dignified space with each seamstress receiving a wage every week that supports them and their family, as well as a Monday through Friday work week, the lunchtime meal, maternity leave, and holidays.
As opposed to the fast fashion tight schedules and order cycles, this is a non-hurried, clean and safe (read: dignified) workspace. After the pattern is cut, the seamstress makes the entire garment from first stitch to proudly signing her name on the tag of the finished product. Their talent is evident in the quality of the clothing and handbags they output.
Fair trade-based organizations (non-profits, wholesale partners) work to bring artisan and ethically-produced goods to a broader market like the United States. This opens the door for fair payment that the artisans otherwise would have a difficult time commanding in their local markets.
Fair trade retailers, like ALVY, provide you with the opportunity to experience the high-quality and artistry from around the world, and support a new way of caring for our fellow humans.
